I Can Feel my Brain Turning to Mush Already

Let’s talk about television. Wanna? ‘Tis the season for new TV shows. I must admit, I don’t look as forward to the new television season as much I used to, but maybe that’s because I have more discriminating tastes? Is that possible? Am I just old? That’s more likely, I fear. Or is it that any and all “reality” programming makes me grind my back molars together (yes, even American Idol…I don’t care if Ellen’s on it this year)?

Some old favorites start back up this week. How I Met Your Mother is awesome, the writing almost as brilliant as that on Friends. Castle was new last year and I gave it a try on a whim because I love Nathan Fillion. Turns out, it’s a darn good show and the lead actress, Stana Katic, really grew on me. Plus, three of my aunts think I look like her, and I think she’s kind of sexy, so I’m flattered. House starts up again tonight, but I’ve decided I’m giving it up. I’ve continued to watch mostly for Lisa Edelstein (whose role seems to get smaller and smaller) and Olivia Wilde (until they hooked her up with Foreman—those two have ZERO chemistry). I think Hugh Laurie is a fantastic actor, but you know what? I just don’t like the character. I get that he’s supposed to be an unlikable guy, but he has no redeeming qualities. He’s just an ass, plain and simple, and I’ve reached the point where I don’t care what happens to him.

I’ve recently begun watching reruns of Criminal Minds on A&E and I find it surprisingly absorbing, so I’m going to DVR that one this season. I keep waiting to see why there’s a mountain of fan fiction between AJ Cook’s J.J. and Paget Brewster’s Emily, but I must not have gotten there yet. They’re both fun to look at, no doubt. I’ve also found Fringe to be pleasantly entertaining, despite my initial reservations about Anna Torv, so I’ll keep watching that. And Dollhouse. Is anybody more brilliant than Joss Whedon? And is there a sexier badass than Eliza Dushku?

New stuff I’m looking forward to: Flashforward (very, very cool concept…and Sonya Walger is everywhere—deservedly so), The Good Wife (I’ll watch Julianna Margulies in just about anything), V (I loved the original from the 80s…plus, I’ll watch Elizabeth Mitchell in anything at all; I think she’s the most underrated actress on TV today), and Law & Order (so I can drool all over myself whenever Alana De La Garza comes on screen), among a handful of others. Hmm…there seems to be a theme in my TV watching…

Do I watch too much TV? How about you? What are you watching this season? What are you giving up?

I was just thinking about you the other day! I didn't realize you'd left a comment until yesterday, so my apologies for the delay in acknowledging you. It's nice to see your name on my site. Send me an e-mail and let me know how and where you are, okay?
  • Aviva  - your TV-viewing theme seems similar to mine...
Hi Georgia, it's been a long time! I saw you on the ImageOut program and realized you're back in Rochester...of course I've since moved away, but still, Welcome Back.

I also can only really watch shows where I like most/all of the characters, and if some of them are nice to look at, too, then so be it. B) I love House, even though House himself is, as you say, an asshole. I also adore Medium--the acting and writing on that show is usually nothing short of excellent. Other shows I'm watching this year: The Good Wife (ditto your thoughts on JM), CSI and CSI: NY (I'm a sucker for crime shows), Castle and 30 Rock (which is fantastic, if you haven't been watching it). I'm also a huge fan of Mad Men, but agree with your friend that if you don't think you'd be able to handle the misogyny you probably won't like it (even though said misogyny is all realistic to the time period). Also, with Mad Men you'd really need to start with Season 1; everything will make a lot more sense in terms...

    Hi, Georgia

Mmm ... nice site. So nice that I can recognise the hand behind. Hi, Elphaba! :cheer:

I must confess that television has lost my interest. I have grown up looking at the telly. I could die if the tv was broken and could not watch my favourite show but life makes you change I suppose.

For the last two years my contact with tv is rare. I try to watch some shows from my country but they are not as good as yours and I get bored. To catch up with new seasons is painfull and I don't bother. So when I hear someone as Amy talk about "Mad Men" I go and buy the First Season. If I like it, then I go for the Second one.

This is to say that I have not lost my way to tv series and instead of watching them "painfully" I buy them all together.
Commercials are all over the planet unless you go for a pay-per-view and you don't have any. At leas here, in Spain.

Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" will be on this year? I wasn't sure about that as he has started a few s...

Amy - I'm so glad you're enjoying Too Close to Touch. It's a personal favorite of mine. As for "Mad Men," I've never watched it. I hear nothing but good things, although I have a gay male friend who told me I might have a hard time with the misogyny. I get that's how it was in the 50s and 60s...I'm just not sure I want to see it played out all over again. LOL!

Elphaba - I'm with you on the Tivo-ing. I couldn't live without my DVR.

    Hey Georgia --

The new website looks great. Have you checked out Mad Men yet? It's so great and is beautiful to look at. Reading and very much enjoying Too Close To Touch right now.
  • Elphaba  - It's possible you're watching too much TV!
I'm definitely interested in Flashforward, also! And I like Fringe and got into Defying Gravity this summer. Oooh...and I love The Biggest Loser. I admit it - I cry every week!

However, they all get Tivo'ed. I can't stand waiting through commercials and rarely have a chance to watch when the shows are on.

I also love this time of year for the FOOTBALL! :woohoo:
