Holiday Spirit
Written by Georgia Saturday, 19 December 2009 19:00
In the spirit of the season, I decided to change things up a little bit. I’ve realized that the majority of my blogs are about things that are bad, that confuse me, or that piss me off. I don’t know about you, but I get tired of so much negativity after a while. It’s exhausting. So in line with the joyous, often squishy feeling I get at this time of year, I want to touch on a truly un-touched-on subject (at least for me):
The goodness in people.
I’ve been witness several times over the past week or two to the gentle kindness in people’s hearts. Nothing dramatic; we’re not talking about Scrooges who woke up and suddenly mended their evil ways. They’re simply people, people who did nice things for me when nothing was in it for them. I noticed and they made me smile.
Like Lisa, our Kickass Realtor Chick, who—though her work with us was finished over a month ago—offered to come to our house to meet the county assessor with us so we aren’t completely clueless and confused.
Kathy (could be Cathy, I’m not sure yet), our new neighbor, who invited us over for wine and pizza with her huge, welcoming, and hilarious family. We had a total blast and never wanted to leave.
Luke, my newest writer friend, who spent a good chunk of time at the previously mentioned gathering talking to me about writing with an exuberance I haven’t felt in a long time. He made me remember what it’s like to be excited about my work.
Roland, our new neighbor on the other side, who, when getting into his car to go someplace this morning, casually asked me, “What kind of treats do the dogs like?”
Kris, my friend from high school, who has made a life out of helping at-risk kids and their parents by using the wonder and gentleness of horses. (And thanks to the economy, her funding has been slashed drastically. Visit her website at www.coastalhorsesense.org to see the amazing work she does and please, please donate if you can. She needs our help.)
Bonnie, my partner in every sense of the word, who went to the grocery store on the Saturday before Christmas to get me baking powder because I needed it for my cookies, but she knew I didn’t want to go.
The guy in the black Toyota in the Target parking lot, who actually stopped and waved me to cross in front of him instead of making me stand there in the bitter wind waiting for him to drive by.
Jim, my colleague at work, who brings me a hot chocolate every single time he runs across the street to Tim Horton’s and who will never let me pay for it.
Doug, my brother-in-law, who went into work on a brittle Saturday morning just because I needed my oil changed. He also topped off my fluids and put air in my tires. Thanks, Doug!
Greg, my other brother-in-law, who spent several of his days off working on our house, never complaining, always smiling, and doing fabulous work. Thanks, Greg!
(My sisters married well, didn’t they?)
That’s quite a list, and that’s just off the top of my head…the people I can actually recall as I sit here and search my brains. I do think most people are good-hearted, but I’m not sure if Christmas brings it out of them or if it just makes me see more clearly. Whatever the cause, I’m glad for it. As the lyrics to “Christmastime is Here” go, Oh that we could always see such spirit through the year.
My best wishes to all of you this holiday season and I hope you have peace in your heart. Thanks for reading.
